Why Do Nursery Herb Plants Outlast Supermarket Herbs?
Supermarket herb pots contain three to five seedlings crammed into a single container, grown under artificial light in just a few weeks. They are sold as a short-use garnish, not a plant designed to survive in your garden.
Supermarket Herb Pots | Herbwise Nursery Herb Plants | |
Plants per pot | 3–5 seedlings, overcrowded | Single established plant |
Grown under | Artificial heat and light | Natural UK growing conditions |
Hardened off? | No | Yes — acclimatised to outdoor UK temperatures before dispatch |
Root development | Shallow, underdeveloped | Deep, established root system |
Lifespan | Days to weeks | Years (perennial varieties) |
Grown without synthetic pesticides? | Not specified | Yes |
Pot size | 7cm (overcrowded) | 9cm recyclable pot with drainage |
Our plants are grown slowly, outdoors, in UK conditions. When they arrive at your door, they have already lived through wind, variable temperatures and real soil. That is why a Herbwise Nursery rosemary plant (Rosmarinus officinalis), planted in a sunny border this July, will still be there in ten years.
How We Grow: Herbwise Nursery’s Growing Method
Every herb plant we sell is grown on our Sussex nursery, dispatched without artificial forcing, and hardened off for the British climate before it leaves us.
Grown in Sussex, Dispatched Across the UK We have grown herb plants on our 3-acre site in West Sussex since 2012. We ship only on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so no plant sits in a courier depot over a weekend. Overnight DPD delivery means most orders arrive the following morning.
Peat-Free and Chemical-Free, Without Compromise All plants grow in a certified peat-free compost mix in 9cm recyclable pots. We use no synthetic pesticides at any stage of growing.
We are not organically certified — organic certification is designed for food producers, not plant nurseries. What we can tell you is that no synthetic pesticide or herbicide has been applied to any plant on this nursery.
Every plant is typically 12–18cm tall at dispatch, with an established root system ready to plant out or pot on immediately on arrival.
Hardened Off for UK Gardens We never use supplementary heat or artificial lighting. Our plants experience UK temperature fluctuations before they leave the nursery. This eliminates the transplant shock that kills plants moved straight from controlled indoor environments. We exhibit at RHS shows including Hampton Court and Wisley.
The Arrives Alive Guarantee: What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?
If any plant arrives damaged, wilting, or not as described, contact us within 48 hours of delivery and we will replace it free of charge. No need to return the plant.
The Herbwise Nursery Arrives Alive Guarantee — Valid for 48 hours from confirmed delivery — Covers: wilting on arrival, transit damage, wrong variety dispatched, or plants not as described — Resolution: free replacement dispatched, or full refund — your choice — No return required: photograph and email us within 48 hours — If you cannot water your plants immediately on arrival, place them in a cool, shaded spot. Plants left unwatered for more than 24 hours may not be covered. If in doubt, contact us before that window closes.
In fourteen years of dispatching herb plants by mail order across the UK, the most common cause of arrival issues is heat stress during summer transit. That is why we ship Monday to Wednesday, use double-walled cardboard boxes with individual cells, and include a moisture-retaining base in every order. We have kept our replacement rate below 1.8% because the system is designed to prevent damage, not just cover it.

Not All Herbs Are Available Year-Round Our range is seasonal because our plants are grown seasonally. Basil, lemongrass and other tender herbs are available from late May through to September. Hardy perennials — rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, mint — are available most of the year. The products shown here are in stock now.
This page covers live potted herb plants for growing — not dried herbs, herb seeds, or herbal supplements. If you are looking for those, they are a different product entirely.
What We Grow: 280+ Herb Plant Varieties Across Six Growing Families
Culinary Herbs — For the Kitchen Garden Our culinary range covers the everyday essentials and the uncommon. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is available in six cultivars: common upright, Tuscan Blue, prostrate, trailing, Miss Jessopp’s Upright, and Green Ginger rosemary. Basil runs to eight varieties including sweet Genovese, Thai, African Blue, Red, and Cinnamon basil. Hardy perennials — thyme, oregano, sage, chives, French tarragon, lovage, and fennel — form the backbone of a permanent kitchen herb garden and return every year without replanting.
Medicinal & Apothecary Herbs — The Wellness Garden Our medicinal herb plant range is grown for gardeners building a wellness garden. Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) is a hardy UK perennial that flowers from July to September. St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is UK native and fully hardy. Comfrey Bocking 14 (Symphytum x uplandicum ‘Bocking 14’) is the specific cultivar sought by organic gardeners for comfrey liquid fertiliser. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), passion flower (Passiflora caerulea), mullein (Verbascum thapsus), and wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) complete the core range.
Aromatic & Scented Herbs — Fragrance and Pollinators Lavender accounts for seven cultivars in our range, from the classic deep-purple Hidcote (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’) through to French lavender (Lavandula stoechas). Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii), scented geraniums (Pelargonium sp.) in rose, lemon, orange, and peppermint forms, and agastache varieties complete the aromatic range. All attract pollinators.
Ground Cover & Path Herbs — Thyme Lawns, Paved Paths, Edges Creeping thyme is available as plug plants in four varieties: red creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum ‘Coccineus’), common creeping thyme, lemon-scented creeping thyme, and ‘Caborn Wine and Roses’. Chamomile Treneague (Chamaemelum nobile ‘Treneague’) is the non-flowering variety suited to a walk-on lawn. Wild garlic (Allium ursinum) is available as bulbs for shaded woodland settings and is offered seasonally in autumn and spring.
Unusual & Hard-to-Find Herbs — Beyond the Garden Centre Lovage (Levisticum officinale), Vietnamese coriander (Persicaria odorata), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata), and holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) are the varieties our customers most frequently tell us they have been searching for. We grow lovage as a single established plant that reaches 2m in a good season.
Herbs for Containers, Windowsills & Small Spaces A standard 60cm window box supports four herb plants: one mint (contained in its own inner pot), one chive, one thyme, and one parsley. A 30cm terracotta pot on a south-facing balcony will grow rosemary, oregano, or thyme indefinitely. Mint, chives, parsley, and lemon balm tolerate partial shade and suit a north-facing windowsill.

Frequently Asked Questions About Raw Honey UK
What happens if my herb plants arrive damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with a photograph. We will dispatch a free replacement or issue a full refund. You do not need to return the plant. Our Arrives Alive Guarantee covers all orders to mainland UK addresses.
Why do nursery herb plants survive longer than supermarket herbs?
Supermarket herbs are grown under artificial light in overcrowded pots and sold as a short-term garnish. Our plants are grown singly, outdoors, without artificial heat, and are fully hardened off before dispatch. They arrive as established plants, not forced seedlings.
When is the best time of year to buy herb plants in the UK?
Hardy perennials can be ordered and planted from March through October. Tender herbs such as basil and lemongrass are available from late May after the last frost risk. We update our in-stock range weekly.
How much does delivery cost, and how long does it take?
Delivery costs £4.95 for orders under £38 and is free on orders over £38. All plants are dispatched by DPD overnight courier on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and arrive the following morning.
Which herbs grow well on a north-facing windowsill or in partial shade?
Mint, chives, parsley, lemon balm, and lovage all tolerate partial shade. Most Mediterranean herbs require at least six hours of direct sun daily and perform poorly in shade. If you are unsure which varieties suit your conditions, contact us before ordering.
Can I order herb plants as a gift?
Yes. We offer curated herb gift sets of six plants presented in recyclable boxes and gift vouchers in any denomination. Gift sets can be sent directly to the recipient with a personal message.
