The most common concern — pesticide residues — requires understanding a specific piece of chemistry. Lipophilic (fat-soluble) pesticides, including the acaricides coumaphos and tau-fluvalinate used to treat Varroa in hives, preferentially accumulate in beeswax rather than in honey.
